GULABI GANG

She yearned to study and go to school ,
But instead minded the cattle in the field,
Only boys go to school ,that was the rule,
Doing daily chores ,girls had their fate sealed.

She stealthily  studied on her own ,
Till her uncle discovered her interest,
He helped her intellectuality to hone,
But her parents thought marriage was the best.

At 12 years of age she became a bride,
Of an ice cream vendor 9 years her senior,
Her in laws were cruel and she often cried,
Her nuclear family of 5 children shifted  exterior .

She worked and rebelled against the atrocities
Committed on the females in  her  community,
One day with great courage joined by other women
She beat up a mean wife beating lecherous man,

She infused courage in all the village women,
They wore pink and strived to teach men a lesson,
With sticks in their hands ,
They call themselves  " Gulabi  gang"'
Together they  are fighting ,
The male chauvinism with a bang.

Facts-
Sampat Devi Pal (born 1960) is the founder and leader of a group of political activists in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state's Banda District (one of the poorest part of UP) called the "gulabi gang" or "pink gang" - so named because they wear a uniform of pink saris. " Mind you," she says, "we are not a gang in the usual sense of the term. We are a gang for justice." The group, numbering several hundred women and a few men, uses vigilante-style tactics to achieve greater social justice for the poor with its main focus on poor women. Their goal is to strike fear in the hearts of wrongdoers and earn the respect of officials who have the power to initiate positive change. They brandish sticks and axes when the need presents itself.
Inspired by this is an  upcoming movie  "Gulab Gang" starring Madhuri Dixit ,in the making .
